The open source initiative and Wikipedia have a far better explanation than I could hope to achieve, but briefly: open source software is distributed freely and its source code is available to anyone to look at and/or modifiy.

This site was created on the SUSE Linux operating system in Kwrite and uploaded using gftp. The images were made in a combination of Gimp and KolourPaint. The site is hosted on a Linux server and is powered by PHP.
