What is OpenOffice.org?
As stated on the index page of this site, OpenOffice.org (OOo in shorthand) is an office suite. The official mission statement of OOo, which can be found on their website states:
"To create, as a community, the leading international office suite that will run on all major platforms and provide access to all functionality and data through open-component based APIs and an XML-based file format."
Basically this means they aim to created an office suite to rival Microsoft Office, but to surpass it by being available for many different platforms (eg. Windows, Linux, Mac OSX) and being compatible with Microsoft Office.
The OOo project began in July 2000 when the StarOffice code was realeased as open source under LGPL and SISSL licenses, although from 2.0 onwards, it will only be avaibable under LGPL.
OOo is consists of lots of different applications that together make up the whole suite. The most commonly used components in 1.x versions are:
- Writer - the word processor. It's similiar to Microsoft Word with fairly similiar features and tools. It can also create PDF files and function as an HTML editor.
- Calc - the spreadsheet. It's similar to Microsoft Excel but has several advanced features that Excel doesn't have. Like Writer, files can be converted to PDF format.
- Impress - the presentation program. It's similar to Microsoft PowerPoint, but as yet a little lacking in readymade templates and clip arts. However, it can convert files to Macromedia Flash format so that they're playable on any computer with Flash player installed.
- Draw - a vector graphics editor. This program is similar to CorelDRAW.
- Math - this can be used to create and edit mathematical formulae which can the be exported to other OOo documents such as Writer and Calc. It too can create PDF's.
Other OOo features include the 'Quickstarter' which runs in the background to allow for quick startup of the program.
